Vaughn Bode was born in Utica, New York on July 22, 1941. He began drawing at the age of 5 to escape a childhood that wasn’t the greatest. Not being able to relate to the world he lived he he began to use drawing as a means to escape into a fantasy world. On September 27, 1957 he gave birth to Cheech Wizard, a character that would create his legacy. Throughout his career he produce a dope body of work, like Das Kampf one of the first underground comics. Vaughn was the recipient in 1969 of a Hugo Award. In 1975 he received the Yellow Kid award in Lucca, Italy. Vaughn is one of the most influential American cartoonists of our time. Much of graffiti art itself comes from the work of Vaughn Bode. Rendering his characters, lettering and cartoon semiotics is a rite of passage for graffiti art crews. Highly respected and loved in the graffiti world Vaughn Bode’s art was made popular by writers like Sket One, Dondi, Seen, Tracy and Mare 139. Unrecognized by most in the fine art realm, the worlds and characters he created permeate our collective pop image bank like a classic visual rock & roll soundtrack for our times.
I cam across him doing research for another artist and have now found a new favorite artist, I tell you research has so many benefits. Vaughn works are noted for their psychedelic look and feel. He was inducted into the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame for comics artists in 2006.
