I.W. Harper in New York

It goes without saying for us that a good drink and conversation are always the way we’d like to enjoy Friday nights. The reality is, that hardly ever happens. On a recent trip to New York however, the power of the Internet prevailed . . . we sent out a last minute invite to some friends in the city – all but one came.

We set up shop at Trunk Club NYC, courtesy of IW Harper  for some derby-inspired cocktails and duds suitable for Belmont. Ok, full transparency: we have no real keen understanding of the whole derby thing, but we do know a good Julep and sportcoat when we see one. Enough to say that the two have much more in common than you think…

Like a good cocktail, a great outfit is comprised of layers – pieces to a complex puzzle if you will – that when mixed together create a unified whole of its parts. They gave us an easy to follow recipe for the Derby – white trousers, relaxed jacket, and a soft shirt tied together with interesting footwear choices and a traditional Julep recipe. Well, we took both and sort of put our spin on them.

Denim shirt, white jeans, soft glen-plaid jackets and some silk pocket squares to help keep the whole thing elegant.

As for the Julep? Oh, yeah, we went ahead and just made up something on the spot and dubbed it the “Man of the Hour”

1 Part Ice

1 Part Gingerbeer

3 Parts IW Harper

A slapped mint leaf (yes, slap it in your palm)

A teardrop worth of bitters

Orange peel to garnish

Happy Sipping
