Never give up on your dreams, no matter how big or small they are you have the ability to achieve whatever you put your mind to. Dream big, and if you put the work in you will achieve those dreams. Last week when I was in Rome, I heard a very inspiring story from an old friend and teammate of mine. Fabio Antonelli, who founded and brought the sport of lacrosse to Italy and my teammate on the Roma Leones Lacrosse team, told me story that I had to share because it shows that you can do anything you set your mind to. His passion for the game was started when he lived and studied in Denver, Colorado during his high school years. As the time came for his study abroad experience to come to an end the lacrosse team was planning a tournament trip to Florida where Fabio was promised a spot on the trip. As the time came around when the team was getting ready for the trip, Fabio found himself somehow missing from the roster for the trip which came as a shock since he was promised a spot. Finding out he wasn’t going to be making the trip with his team Fabio quit the team at his coaches displeasure. At his High School graduation on the University of Denver’s stadium he went up to his coach to say thank you for the opportunity to play with him and told him about his dream to come back and play college lacrosse in the near future. This was his coaches response,
“You will never be back in the states playing lacrosse unless you go back to italy make a team and maybe who knows 10 years from now you can come back to play with some teams”. (May 30,2004)
Hearing someone telling that you can’t do something is the greatest form of motivation to prove that person wrong, and that’s just what Fabio set out to do. Fast forward a few years, Fabio will be venturing back across the pond to the US with the Italian National Team to compete in the FIL World Lacrosse Championships. It just so happens that this year marks the 10 year anniversary of his High School graduation and guess where this year’s championship will be, you guessed it Denver. A place where at one point he was told he would never play lacrosse and not only is he going back but he is leading the Italian National Team on their quest for a World Championship. Sometimes people not believing in you make you work that much harder to achieve your goals. Good luck to the Italian National Team in the World Championships this coming week.
