Seems that since Kanye has been expanding the minds of the hip hop culture, art has been on the tip of the tongue of many in urban culture today. I am more than happy about this, but please people do some research, learn more about art before you say you’re into it. Basquiat, Dali, Barnes are some of my biggest influences in art but one artist really stands out.
I went to a performing art middle school where our teacher forced us to do a research paper on an artist. We picked from a pool and I drew Vincent Van Gogh. Little did I know the effect that he would leave on me. In my research I came across a painting by the name Starry Night. Over time it has become my favorite painting of all time and not due to its popularity. When I was just becoming an artist, I used to stare at it and get lost in the details and the story of the city below. This painting made me understand how each person has a different perspective when looking at art. “Fun Fact” he actually painted this during the day from memory while he was staying at the psychiatric hospital of Saint Remy-of-Province.
Starry Night reflects the anguish of the artist, the want to escape into darkness. It is more than evident that Van Gogh was in deep depression when painting this. The energetic strokes, the vibrant colors of the stars against the dark blues and blacks of the night reflect the need of a desperate man for hope in the middle of the “black night”. Starry Night is a fight between a man and his anxiety.
