The Blood Is In The Shoes – Oxblood Zurich

Oxblood Zurich is known for having the world’s largest selection of Shel Cordovan Shoes. We had the chance to speak with Mr. Claude Locher of Oxblood to get some insight behind their shoes.

CC: What was the inspiration behind the name Oxblood Shoes?

CL: Oxblood is a color considered to be a dark shade of red. Also named burgundy or bordeaux. Most Cordovan Shoes are in Oxblood. In my opinion a very nice and glamorous color which gives a very nice patina over the years. So that’s why we named our shop Oxblood Shoes. But we have of course also Shoes in different colors.

CC: For the gent that wants to learn, explain what are Shell Cordovan shoes?

CL: Shell Cordovan is one of the best and most exclusive leathers in the world using the Centuries-old method of pure vegetable tannage and hand finishing. The tanning process takes a full six months to complete and produces leather that is soft and supple, yet very durable. Over time, the patina of shell cordovan shoes will only improve, deepening with each polishing and showing to full advantage the especially rich character of the leather. As durable and comfortable to wear as they are beautiful to look at, genuine shell cordovan shoes truly are masterworks.

Advantages of Genuine Shell Cordovan:

  • The leather should last 10 to 15 years.
  • The leather does not develop the small wrinkles which often appear in calfskin shoes.
  • It develops a beautiful patina with age.
  • It usually shines just by brushing.
  • Water does not easily penetrate the leather.

CC: How do you all set yourself apart from other shoe stores in Switzerland?

CL: We are specialized in Cordovan Shoes. Unless someone names me another shop I say we are the Shop with the World’s largest Selection of Cordovan Shoes. And then you can drink beer and coffee in our shop.

CC: Do you all offer shoe care and cobbler services?

CL: Of course, we care about shoes.

CC: How do you see Oxblood Shoes influencing men to dress better in Zurich and by extension the society in general?

CL:We just ask a simple question: Do you wanna spend every second year 200 USD for shitty shoes or do you want to spend every ten years USD 650 for nice and quality shoes? We let of course the customer decide.
